Sea Salt vs Rock Salt

Reader Marilyn asks about something a relative found on the web:

Rock Salt or Sea Salt
STRESS RELIEF… Is salt bad for hypertensive?

What is bad for hypertension is iodized salt, which is a fake salt. It is made up of only 3 synthetic chemicals, sodium, chloride, iodine. It does not melt in water (glistens like diamonds), does NOT melt in the body, does not melt in the kidneys, gives kidney stones, and raises blood pressure. However, it is the salt favored by the synthetic drug-based doctors who say it is very clean and sanitary, pointing to how white it is and how it glistens like diamonds. The fake salt is man-made in a factory.

The true salt, which comes from the sea and dried under the sun and commonly called rock salt, has 72 natural minerals including natural sodium, chloride, iodine. It melts in water, melts in your body, melts in the kidneys, do not give kidney stones, and best of all brings down blood pressure and stops/prevents muscle cramps, numbness, tingling. If youget muscle cramps in the lower legs at night, just take 1/2 teaspoon of rock salt and a glass of water, and the cramps with its horrific pain will be gone in 5 minutes.

Marilyn was right to be suspicious – this is utter nonsense. Common table salt comes from evaporating seawater (like what happens up at Useless Loop on our west coast). Rock salt comes from mineral deposits and is mined.

It’s the same stuff. It’s possible that the rock salt is higher in other minerals, but that’s the only difference. The chemical behaviour of both types of salt in the body (and everywhere else) is identical.

  1. I’m not surprised to learn that sea salt is often marketed as rock salt. And yes – making larger crystals is a ploy often employed to make something appear more “natural” and less processed. Sugar companies do exactly the same thing with that chunky brown sugar that they sell.

  2. Sea salt is often marketed as Rock Salt. This article is incorrect. Rock Salt is a naturally occurring mineral, which may have a different breakdown of minerals and impurities. Not all naturally occurring impurities are beneficial (eg Arsenic doesn’t do much for your health)

Why all these astroturfed articles about coarser salt being better for you? Let me guess – It’s more expensive, so profit margins are greater?

If you read anything on foods, take it with a pinch of salt. Most articles are commercial motivated or astroturfed and gleefully distributed by people who wouldn’t have a clue (eg personal trainers)

  3. I realized more new stuff on this fat reduction issue. One issue is that good nutrition is extremely vital any time dieting. A big reduction in bad foods, sugary foods, fried foods, sweet foods, red meat, and bright flour products could possibly be necessary. Retaining wastes unwanted organisms, and toxins may prevent targets for losing weight. While selected drugs momentarily solve the condition, the unpleasant side effects are certainly not worth it, and so they never supply more than a non permanent solution. It can be a known proven fact that 95% of fad diets fail. Thank you for sharing your notions on this web site.
