black mastic remover

I’ve begun lifting old carpet (and want to sand and seal old pine floorboards underneath in five rooms in 1950s house). Apparently the rubbery substance glued onto floorboards beneath carpet is called black mastic and is tediously slow to scrape off without scratching wood floor. Is there any chemical solution I can apply to help remove it that won’t damage the wood underneath?
