Hand Sanitiser

With the current Covid-19 situation, there is a shortage of hand sanitizer available and also Isopropyl alcohol (Rubbing Alcohol) to make my own hand sanitiser. Can I use Methylated Spirits (Ethonol) as a substitute or will this be toxic to the skin. If I can, then can you provide a good recipe to make some

If you’re stuck, a 0.1% concentration of benzalkonium chloride will also work. You can buy bottles of concentrate which is suited for skin-based use online.

Some people may be tempted to buy algaecide from Bunnings and then dilute that but note that you 𝙈𝙐𝙎𝙏 check the MSDS to ensure that the product does not contain anything else aside from water. Hy-chlor’s basic algaecide meets this requirement however it won’t be recommended because it is not produced with the intent of being a hand sanitizer concentrate although it must be safe enough to be used in a pool where there the application tends to come into direct skin contact in pools so…

I’ll let you make up your mind!

Yes, metho is fune. 70% solution with water (70 metho, 30 water). That’s all most hand sanitisers are (in a gel form)
