Hi Mark, Would you mind clarifying the arguments online about Methylated Spirits and its use as a hand sanitiser if diluted? Many people are saying it is Methanol. Would you give some advice in the current climate of disease control? Many thanks.

It’s not methanol. It’s mostly ethanol. It’s called “methylated” because it used to contain methanol. The methanol was added to make it undrinkable, but it didn’t work – people still drank it. So it now contains Bitrex instead to make it undrinkable – the same stuff that people put on their fingernails to break the fingernail-biting habit.
It’s effective as a sanitiser at concentrations above 70%
