A few weeks back a listener asked about BPA (Bisphenol A) in plastics. I was going to chase it up the following week, but I’ve just remembered that I didn’t do my homework…
Anyhow, here’s the answer.
If you look on the bottom of any plastic container you’ll see one of these symbols:
It’s a recycling code that places the plastic into one of seven categories, so that recyclers know what goes with what.
Put simply, the ones to avoid are 3 and 7 – these are the ones that may potentially contain BPA (and may emit it when heated).
Any of the other numbers are fine, and completely BPA free.
